US Airways might fly to Brazil

January 29, 2009 | By More

American airline US Airways, part of the Star Alliance, with a hybrid service and a low-cost feel to it, wishes to fly to Brazil. According to Panrotas, the company filed a request with the Brazilian authorities for a daily flight from Philadelphia / Charlotte to Rio de Janeiro.

We hope the new flight comes true. It is an international flight with destination Rio de Janeiro, which will help break the São Paulo monopoly when it comes to international flights. As the 7 new flights from the States that will begin operating in July cannot have São Paulo as its destination, both Delta, American and Continental submitted requests for flights to Rio de Janeiro.

We don’t know whether US Airways, still struggling with the incorporation of American West, without a strong partner to face the crisis and a more spartan on-board service, will be able to compete with the other American airlines. But the fact that it is a Star Alliance company (TAM will be joining the alliance soon) and an end to tariff limitations on Brazilian skies might contribute to the company’s success.

The sad thing is we might end up having 5 or 6 American airlines flying to Brazil (Spirit gave up) while there is just the one Brazilian airline flying to the States.
