Delta with plans for Brasilia

Posted by: admin | Comments (0)

Delta handed a request to the US aviation authorities asking for permission to fly three times a week from Atlanta to Brasilia, from 17 December 2009. The request was made on behalf of Northwest, an airline controlled by Delta. The flights would be done with Boeings 757.

To be able to fly that route Delta would have to shuffle some of its flights to the North and the Northwest of Brazil. Manaus, not selling really well, would lose 4 out of its six weekly frequencies. Three of those frequencies will be used to fly to Brasilia. The remaining frequency would help divide in two the Recife / Fortaleza / Atlanta flight. There would be a direct Recife / Atlanta flight, and a direct Fortaleza /Atlanta flight, with 2 weekly frequencies each.

Delta is making an effort to increase its market share in Brazil. It is a pity United doesn’t seem so keen, in particular since American, Delta, Continental and even US Airways are all planning to increase their Brazilian operations.

Delta got from the American authorities two of the frequencies that belonged to United, allowing it to fly from any destination in Brazil. With those two additional frequencies, and another one it will get from a flight to Atlanta, it will fly three times a week from Los Angeles to São Paulo (a route that only counted with a direct flight by Korean Air).

Delta is returning a frequency it used to fly outside Rio/São Paulo (it will fly 6 times a week to Manaus instead of 7). American will use that frequency to increase its own flight from Miami to Belo Horizonte from three to four times a week.
