Tam, a promotion turned into frustration

So much hype for nothing. Customers trying to take advantage of Tam’s promotion over the weekend (Tam fare deals over the weekend) saw their hopes turned into frustration and anger. Tam’s website was unavailable for most of the weekend (I unsuccesfully tried to enter the page a dozen times over Saturday and Sunday). Customers attracted by the promotional deals couldn’t check them out. But even worse, anybody wanting to carry out any operation not related to the flight deals couldn’t do anything either. No sales, no information, no nothing.
Hard to believe the IT department of one of the major Brazilian airlines cannot cope with the visits generated by a sales promotion. A sorry sight.
Tam fare deals over the weekend

Tam is announcing a special promotion beginning tonight at 20:00 and ending at 06:00 on Monday. Return tickets must be purchased and the minimum stay at the destination is two nights. Valid for flights from 6 March and 9 May 2010.
It remains to be seen whether the promotional fares will meet expectations.
a new Azul pass, suffering from hyperinflation

5 March is the deadline if you want to purchase the new edition of Azul’s “Passaporte”. The pass allows for unlimited flights during March and April (initially the pass was sold as being valid only for March; Azul suddely changed its mind and extended the period), with the exception of Fridays and Sundays.
The 2009 of the Passport had a cost of R$499. We presented it at Azul launches its Passport – beware of the restrictions!. The 2010 Passport is suffering from hyperinflation and will set you back R$899.
If the price is not a problem, go to Azul’s website and read carefully all the rules.
We bought the 2009 pass and were quite happy with our purchase. But with the new price it has become a far less appealling deal, at least to us.
TAP and Decolar offering a joint promotion

Online agency Decolar has launched a promotion along with airline TAP for purchases made only this week. The packages including flight and hotel accommodation for 4 nights. Departures from São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte and Brasilia no later than 31 March.
The price of the packages, taxes not included, is 854 USD for Londong, 877 USD for Rome, Madrid and Lisbon and 966 USD for Barcelona.
Mexicana with promotional fares to Miami, New York, Oakland and London

Mexicana is offering deals to New York from 666 USD, Miami from 610 USD, Oakland from 718 USD and London (England) from 877 USD. For purchases until 25 January 2010 and departures from São Paulo no later than 31 January 2010. Read the rules before making any purchases.
Tap, promotional fares to Europe

Portuguese airline Tap announces promotional fares to Europe. There are fares departing from Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo on tourist class from 824 USD to fly to 23 destinations in Europe (Portugal excluded). Purchases until 22 January 2010. Flights between 1 February and 31 March 2010. Departing from Belo Horizonte and Brasilia prices go up to 899 USD. Departures from the Northeast are much more expensive. Prices quoted do not include taxes.
Flying executive from Río, São Paulo and Belo Horizonte there are fares from 2500 USD (plus taxes). Valid for flights until 31 March 2010.
The prices are not outstanding by any means but at least Tap flies to airports other than Rio and São Paulo.
American: Rio de Janeiro – New York from 883 USD

American Airlines are feeling the new competition from US Airways and Tam in Río de Janeiro. Among the amount of supposedly promotional fares on its website, one stands out: 883 USD (QLX0L8U, taxes not included) to fly from Rio de Janeiro to New York. Valid for purchases until 18 January 2010 and for flights between 19 January and 30 April 2010.
It is not an exceptional price but among the big airlines, it is the best. You can fly cheaper with Avianca (with connecting flights in São Paulo and Bogotá) from 667 USD (KEEP0030, taxes not included).
Lan: deals to the U.S.

Chilean airline Lan is announcing at its website fares from São Paulo to Miami from 694 USD, to Los Ángeles from 751 USD and to New York from 878 USD (taxes not included).
Minimum stay 6 days. Tariffs not valid for flights between 1 January and 20 January 2010. Read the full rules.
Air Europa and Tap, competition on the Salvador – Spain route

Tap has just run a fare promotion for flights from Salvador to Spain. Hard to understand why the promotion was not widely announced. In any case, the reason for the deals offered now by Tap is the fact that Air Europa is offering fares from 660 USD (taxes excluded) to fly from Salvador to Madrid or Barcelona. Tariffs valid for purchases until 7 January 2010 and for flights between 17 December 2009 and 30 April 2010. Tap’s reign over the northeast is over, at least when Salvador is involved.
Azul, daily deals for the next fortnight

Today’s promotion involves flights from and to Salvador. We haven’t found any prices we could call promotional and for that reason we urge you to compare Azul’s “deals” with the current prices offered by the competition (main Brazilian airlines). If (and only if) there is any extraordinary deal over the coming fortnight we’ll post about it here on the blog.
